In a significant move towards enhancing transparency and efficiency in the tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism has launched an online system for the classification of accommodation units and recognition of Tourism Service Providers. This new platform allows applicants to submit their requests via the National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI+) portal at nidhi.tourism.gov.in, which now also features an integrated payment gateway, streamlining the process for stakeholders in the hospitality industry.

Continuing its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of tourists, the Ministry has introduced a 24/7 Multi-Lingual Tourist Helpline, accessible through toll-free number 1800111363 and short code 1363. This service is available in 12 languages, including 10 international languages, designed to assist both domestic and foreign tourists with vital travel information and support in emergencies while traveling within India.

While tourist safety is primarily managed at the state level, the Ministry is actively collaborating with State Governments and Union Territory (UT) Administrations to implement dedicated Tourist Police forces. Through this initiative, numerous states and UTs, including Telangana, Delhi, and Goa, have successfully deployed Tourist Police to bolster on-ground safety measures for travelers.

Additionally, state authorities can benefit from the ‘Safe Tourism Destinations for Women’ program, which is funded by the Nirbhaya Fund. This initiative aims to enhance the safety and security of women tourists across India.

In a bid to further promote tourism and acknowledge the importance of the sector, the Ministry of Tourism launched a Handbook on Industry Status for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector in September 2024. This guide aims to assist state and UT governments in adapting their tourism policies to reflect current industry standards.

The e-Visa scheme now welcomes nationals from 172 countries, valid for entry through various ports of entry, including 32 airports and 6 seaports. India has witnessed a remarkable surge in International Tourist Arrivals (ITAs) from 2019 to 2024, showcasing a steady recovery and growth in the tourism sector.

Year ITAs (in Million)
2019 17.91
2020 6.33
2021 7.00
2022 14.33
2023 18.89
2024 20.57

To further stimulate the hospitality sector, the Government has introduced a revamped Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, effective from September 22, 2025. These reforms include significant reductions in GST rates for essential services within the tourism sector.

  • GST on hotel rooms priced under ₹7,500 per day has decreased from 12% to 5% (without ITC).
  • For buses with more than 10 seats, GST has been reduced from 28% to 18%.
  • Art and cultural goods will also see a reduction in GST from 12% to 5%, supporting local artisans.
  • Many food items and consumer goods used in hospitality are now taxed at 5% or even have nil GST, lowering operational costs for businesses.
